SHENANDOAH, Feb. 8 — Page County High School hosted the Region B Scholastic Bowl last week after earning its first district title in the competition last month. While Page finished just 10 points below the eventual Region B champions from Buckingham, the Panthers were the only squad in the competition that placed three members on the All-Region team.

Among those All-Region selections were sophomore Summer Kite, senior Eleanor Benson and senior Jackson Morris. Kite and Benson were selected to the All-Region’s second team, while Morris earned first team honors. Morris, the top point scorer for Page at the region meet, was also selected first team for the Bull Run All-District Scholastic Bowl team. Kite earned second team honors on the All-District squad.

Among the five schools competing, only 10 students received All-Region honors — five on both the first and second teams. All-Region selections were made among the Top 5 scoring individuals (first team), followed by the next five highest scorers (second team).

At the Region B meet on Feb. 8, Page County won big in two rounds — 260-80 over Stuarts Draft, and 245-115 over Mt. View. The Panthers then lost two close rounds — 230-200 to Clarke, and 215-195 Buckingham.

The real upset of the Region B tournament came in the fourth round when Stuarts Draft upset Clarke, 155-135. That pushed the Eagles into being the Region B runner-ups, while Buckingham took the Region B title. The Knights’ only loss of the day was a close, 205-175, decision to Clarke.

Page County finished the tournament at 2-2, and just 10 total points behind the Knights (910 to 900). However, the “round robin” tournament structure left the Panthers just short of earning a trophy. Clarke earned runner-up status with only 770 total points after going 3-1 on the day. Buckingham also went 3-1, but won the tie-breaker on total points.

As Region B champions, the Buckingham Knights will now advance to state at the Class 2 VHSL Scholastic Bowl on Saturday, Feb. 25 in Williamsburg.
