Page County picks up third-straight district win in Bull Run

SHENANDOAH, April 29 — With six matches remaining in the regular season, the Page County High School boys soccer team sits firmly in third place in the Bull Run District. The Panthers captured their third-straight district win on Tuesday evening over the Falcons of Central, 4-1.

“I think we played a really well rounded game… we let in an unfortunate goal late in the game to give them their only goal of the night,” PCHS head coach Tyler Knight said. “Overall, I liked the way we moved the ball around throughout the midfield, and we are using our back line more and more each game.”

Senior Josh O’Neill found the back of the net first for the Panthers, nudging a header passed the goalie just seven minutes into the match. Despite putting a lot of pressure on the Central goalkeeper, Page would maintain its 1-0 lead into the half.

After an even exchange over the first 10 minutes of the second half, Page County began attacking the goal with four shots on goal in three minutes. The Panthers then went on a scoring spree with three goals in under five minutes. Senior Sam O’Neill (22:50), freshman Reed Richards (20:54) and junior Dawson Richards (18:16) all hit pay dirt. Sam, Dawson and senior Andrew Ely all picked up assists.

Page County lead 4-0 with 18 minutes left in the match. The Panthers then allowed Central’s only goal three minutes later, when sophomore forward Erick Caballero Guevara found the sweet spot on a free kick.

Central would put one more off the post and Page hit some nice shots saved by the Falcon goalie, but the scoring ended with a 4-1 district win for the Panthers.

“I’m very proud of the guys and how far we’ve already come this season,” Coach Knight said. “We still have plenty of work to do and plenty of room to grow and improve. With our win last night, we have surpassed our win total from last season.”

With the loss, Central falls to 4-6-1 overall and 3-5-1 in the Bull Run — currently fifth place. Next up, the Falcons host Madison at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 2. Central beat the Mountaineers on the road, 3-2, on April 8.

Prior to Tuesday night’s matchup with Central, Page County defeated Luray, 6-2, on Friday at Buddy Comer Stadium. Sam O’Neill recorded two goals and an assist. Freshman Reed Richards had a goal and two assists, while Dawson Richards also had a goal and one assist. Juniors Wade McAnulty and Ryan Phillippi each had a goal as well.

“After we were caught sleeping in the first minute, we got ourselves organized and finished the game out strong,” Coach Knight said.

With three-straight district wins, Page County now sits at 5-2-1 in the Bull Run and 6-3-1 overall — already matching last year’s win total with six matches to go. Next up, the Panthers travel to Berryville to face the Eagles of Clarke County at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 1. Page defeated Clarke, 1-0, at home on April 8.
