August 30, 1962 — Army Sgt. John E. Young, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rufus G. Young, of Stanley, participated with more than 70,000 Army and Air Force personnel in Exercise Swift Strike II, a two-week U.S. Strike Command maneuver in North and South Carolina that ended Aug. 17.
Sergeant Young is a fire team leader in Co. D. of the 101st Airborne Division’s 502nd Infantry, regularly stationed at Fort Campbell, Ky.
He entered the Army in October 1960.
The sergeant is a 1959 graduate of Shenandoah High School.
