Six local players earn All-Region basketball honors

LURAY, Feb. 27 — On Monday, Region B officials released selections for the 2022-23 All-Region 2B basketball teams. Among the honorees were six local players as the rosters resembled those of the All-District selections the week prior. This year’s All-Region selections included three from Luray and three from Page, two selected for the first team and four placed on the second team.

Luray senior Jaidyn McClung and Page County junior Adryn Martin were first team selections for the All-Region 2B girls basketball team. Luray junior Emily Donovan and Page freshman Ali Purdham were chosen for the second team.

Strasburg junior Macy Smith was selected as the Region 2B “Player of the Year.”

Top-seeded Clarke County (22-5) captured the Region 2B tournament championship, 47-31, over No. 2 Strasburg (21-7) on Saturday, Feb. 25. Both teams now advance to the VHSL Class 2 state tournament, which begins on Friday, March 3.

  • Ali Purdham — Page, freshman
  • Mya Councill — Mountain View, senior
  • Emily Gorrell — Strasburg, freshman
  • Kaiya Williams — Clarke, junior

On the boys side, Luray junior Christian Lentz and Page County senior Jacob Williams both were selected for the All-Region 2B boys second team.

Madison County junior Bryce Breeden was chosen as the Region 2B “Player of the Year.”

Second-seeded Madison County (22-6) defeated No. 4 Strasburg (19-8) on Saturday, Feb. 25 at Shenandoah University, 50-39, to claim the Region 2B tournament title. Both teams now advance to the VHSL Class 2 state tournament, which begins on Friday, March 3.
