All five council candidates file within two days of deadline

STANLEY — Out of 10 seats up for grabs among the county’s three towns in November’s municipal elections, it would seem that 70 percent are already decided. Incumbents for three council seats in Luray are currently unchallenged. Three candidates (including one incumbent) have filed for three seats in Shenandoah, in addition to the longtime mayor. None of the four will be contested on the ballot.

However, in Stanley — during the final two days before Tuesday evening’s deadline last week — a total of five candidates completed and filed paperwork with the county registrar to appear on the ballot as a candidate for three available seats on council. Due to Stanley’s population, none of the candidates were required to gather any signatures.

As we reported about 10 days ago, incumbent council members Bruce Stoneberger (vice mayor), Robin Good, and Doug Purdham had all picked up paperwork from the registrar’s office. As expected, all three filed by the Tuesday deadline.

Two additional candidates also filed to challenge those incumbents — Donald E. Good Jr. and Jason Campbell.

Up for grabs are three, four-year terms that will extend through Dec. 31, 2030.

PVN plans to host a candidate forum in September and offer Q&As from the candidates later this summer.

Three questions for voters to consider in November are expected to appear on the ballot, but the local registrar’s office has not received specific information about those referendums, according to Page County Voter Registrar Carol Gaunt.
