February 12, 1891 — The Tannery Fire Department was on exhibition last Tuesday evening, and the excellence of its service was the admiration of all who witnessed it.

Messrs. Deford and Company have greatly added to their facilities for fighting fire, being now prepared to throw eight streams of water, each an inch in diameter, at one time. The water is thrown by steam pumps with immense pressure, capable of throwing it perpendicularly a distance of 40 feet.

The water supply is inexhaustible, and the streams of course could be kept playing in event of fire indefinitely. They have about fourteen hundred feet of hose, which may be transported quickly to any place needed on trucks recently provided for the purpose.

Their fire department cost about $2,000. This is certainly suggestive to Luray as to what property owners should do for their protection. In addition to all this expensive protection they never allow a dollar’s worth of their property to go without insurance.
