October 6, 1887 — The northbound evening No. 4 last Monday was derailed and badly damaged at Marksville Station.
It appears that the switch had been left open by the southbound train which had just passed, and when No. 4 pulled out she ran off the track headlong over the embankment, upsetting the engine.
The rails and ties were torn up for some distance. None of the passengers or crew were hurt, except the fireman, who had one of his feet pretty badly mashed.
The blame for the accident, we learn, belongs to the brakeman on No. 1, who left the switch open.
