SHENANDOAH, Oct. 5 — On Tuesday, Page County High School Athletic Director Bill Simmons announced that the Panthers have found an opponent to fill the Oct. 15 void on their football schedule, where Mountain View High School was originally scheduled to host Page.

The Generals canceled their 2021 fall football season after one game — a 62-0 loss at Luray on Aug. 27 — due to low participation. Mt. View started practice in early August with only 14 players, but built the roster up to 20-plus for the first game. However, early attrition lead to the cancellation of the Generals’ season.

Now, instead of hitting the road in two weeks, Page County will host Petersburg (WVa) at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 15 in a non-district matchup.

The Panthers (3-3) have a big night planned this Friday when they host Bull Run District foe and neighboring rival East Rockingham at 7 p.m. A special ceremony that evening will mark the official naming of the facility as the “Buddy Comer Stadium at Panther Field” after the longtime teacher and coach. The PVN sports crew will also be on hand to accompany the NFHS livestream of the game.

Page will be looking for its second district win this Friday after a Sept. 24 forfeit by Madison, officially scored as a 2-0 win. The Panthers other two wins this season were to non-district opponents Nelson (47-6 at home on Sept. 7), and Bath (42-0 on the road last Friday night).

Page suffered district losses to Central (49-15 at home Aug. 27) and Luray (21-12 on the road Sept. 17).

With Mt. View cancelling its season and Madison forfeiting its game, there is no doubt the Panthers will make the eight-team field for the Region 2B playoffs in November. However, a win Friday night could help in first round seedings in the region playoff.

Following Friday’s night game against East Rock, Page finishes the season and its district schedule hosting Strasburg Oct. 29 and going on the road to Clarke on Nov. 5.
