LURAY, July 20 — On Monday night, Page County Administrator Amity Moler announced that the county was moving forward with plans to contract with Virginia’s Department of Motor Vehicles to operate a DMV Select office in Luray. The local DMV office on Fairlane Drive (just off Collins Avenue adjacent to the Page Valley fairgrounds) shut down in April after the state conducted a review of its practices due to “potential inconsistencies with policies and procedures.”
“I think it’s going to be an upgrade from the current location,” Moler told supervisors at Monday’s regular meeting.
The county administrator stated that more than 100 applications were received for two positions in the DMV Select office, which will now be located in the Page County Government Center on South Court Street. Moler said the staff is set to be trained during the last two weeks of August.
Currently, plans call for the new DMV Select office to open in September. Page County is not eligible for a full-service DMV, due to comparative usage at nearby DMV sites.
DMV does not operate Select locations itself. The state agency contracts with private citizens and local governments to provide services connected to the use of a motor vehicle. However, a driver’s license can not be issued or renewed at these sites, as well as some other services reserved for full-service sites.
The shutdown of the Luray office was labeled as “temporary” back in April, during a DMV review of the office’s procedures by its contracted, private, third party operators. That review lead to an official closure and dissolution of the agreement between Virginia DMV and the Luray Select office on June 1.
No details about the “inconsistencies” was provided.
Until the new DMV Select office opens at the County Government Center in Luray, customers may conduct DMV business online at dmv.virginia.gov or visit other customer service locations in the region:
