First snowfall

December 7, 1967 — Although winter does not officially begin until Dec. 22, last Thursday morning looked like it had already arrived.

It began snowing here about 5 a.m. and continued throughout much of the day interspersed with rain and sleet. Up to 11 inches of the white stuff was reported in many sections of the Valley.

It was the first snow of the 1967 fall season and considered by some as the biggest November snow since 1939.

There was practically no wind accompanying the snow and no drifting was reported.

All Page County schools were closed Thursday and Friday due to the hazardous road conditions. The unexpected heavy snowfall slowed traffic and curtailed some business operations and meetings.
