Age 96, Luray, Va.
In loving memory, we honor the remarkable life of Janice Irene Griffith Hoak, affectionately known to many as “Chick,” who passed away peacefully on June 9, 2026, at the age of 96. Born on January 11, 1930, in the picturesque town of Luray, Virginia, Janice was the cherished daughter of Harper Gilbert Griffith and Bessie Mae Ellis Griffith.
Janice was a beacon of strength and warmth, whose life was intricately woven with love, devotion, and unwavering faith. She graduated from Luray High School in 1947, where she began forming the friendships and values that would last a lifetime. On February 3, 1951, she embarked on a beautiful journey of love and companionship with Clarence A. Hoak Jr., a union that blessed them with a lifetime of shared dreams and family joys until Clarence’s passing on June 30, 2005.
Together, Janice and Clarence raised a family filled with love and laughter. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Jeanne Yvonne Hoak of Luray, Virginia, who carries forward her legacy of kindness and compassion. Janice was predeceased by her beloved son, Jeffrey Clarence Hoak, whom she cherished deeply. Her enduring spirit lives on in her granddaughters, Ashley Nicole Hoak, Felicia Ann McDaniel, and Cheslynn Yvonne Graves and husband Daniel, and her great-grandchildren, Haley Marie Spain and fiancé Chase Martin, Emma Paige Clark, Harper Jeffery McDaniel, Hannah Casey McDaniel, DJ, Miranda Marie, Lydia Irene, and Lincoln Jeffrey Graves. Each of them held a special place in Janice’s heart, and she found immense joy in watching them grow.
Janice was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence, her brothers Gilbert, Elbert, and Nelson Griffith, and her sisters Elva Judd, Mildred Beahm, and M. Chloe Miller. Though they have all departed, the bonds they shared remain unbroken, a testament to the enduring love of family.
Her career path led her to work at Luray Textile until her children were born. After nurturing her family, she found fulfillment in her roles at the Panorama Gift Shop and Luray Caverns, where her warmth and hospitality left a lasting impression on all who met her.
A devoted member of the Morning Star Lutheran Church, Janice’s faith was an integral part of her life. She sang joyously in the church choir, her voice a melody of praise and gratitude. Her greatest joy was in caring for her family, whether through babysitting, cooking beloved Sunday dinners, or filling their home with music from her piano and guitar. Her laughter was infectious, her spirit vibrant, and her love boundless. She loved to sing, dance and play Setback.
Janice’s life will be celebrated on June 12, 2026, at 11 a.m. at the Morning Star Lutheran Church by Pastor Ryan Viands, where her spirit will be honored with the same love and warmth she shared with others. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Morning Star Lutheran Church or the Luray Fire Dept., organizations close to Janice’s heart.
As we say goodbye to Janice Irene Hoak, we remember her not just with love, but with gratitude for the legacy of grace and kindness she leaves behind. She will forever be loved and missed, her memory a guiding light for all who were privileged to know her.
