Age 88, Stanley, Va.
Jean “Delores” Painter, 88, of Stanley, passed away on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at her home.
She was born on August 17, 1937, to the late Freddie and Allie Good Painter.
She was a graduate of Stanley High School and at the time of her retirement was employed at McCoy’s Store in Stanley. She was a member of Leake’s Chapel Church.
Delores is survived by her daughters, Karen Koons and Kristi Hilliard; her son-in-law, Joseph Hilliard Jr.; her grandchildren, Allison “Allie” Hilliard and Luke Hilliard; her sister-in-law, Charlotte Painter; and her very spoiled cat, Shadow.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her companion of many years, Paul “Pat” Price; her brothers, Tommy Painter, Vernon Dinges, and Floyd Dinges; and her son-in-law, John Koons.
Delores was known for her love of sweets, shopping (especially yard sales and thrift stores), and traveling. She enjoyed many cruises with Karen and John and, after John’s passing, traveled extensively across the U.S. with Karen. Among her favorite destinations were Utah, The Badlands, and riding in a convertible through the Florida Keys. She ziplined and rode a jet ski and a Segway for the first time in her 70s and was Kristi’s roller coaster riding partner until her heart bypass surgery in her 60s.
She was a great friend and companion to her family, and her grandchildren have wonderful memories of their Maw Maw taking them to DRs and Tastee Freez for treats and enjoying them on her front porch swing while she told them make believe stories.
She was her family’s rock and constant caretaker and we will miss her humor, good nature, intelligence, and curiosity. The love she showed to her family is beyond measure.
At Delores’s request, a graveside service will be conducted by Pastor Duane Painter on Monday, June 29, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Beahm’s Chapel Cemetery and she will be interred beside of her parents.
The family would like to thank Mom’s neighbors, Chris and Pam Hall, for being so caring, kind, and generous to Mom for over 30 years. We would also like to thank her PCP, Marie Amico, the staff at Page Rural Health Center, Tammy Shoremount and the entire staff of Gentiva Hospice, and her many doctors and the staff at UVA, especially her former oncologist, Dr. Michael Douvas.
