LURAY, May 11Luray High School was unable to field four athletic teams this spring due to low turnout.

Athletic Director Don Ehlers confirmed this week that LHS did not field the following teams during the shoterned 2021 spring season:

• Varsity Softball

• JV Softball

• JV Baseball

• JV Boys Soccer

“We have a number of teams in the spring and not enough to fill rosters,” Ehlers said. “Numbers at some schools are down 50 percent.”

Ehlers blames the downturn, at least in part, on the COVID-19 pandemic over the past year, which he says has “hurt our numbers all three seasons.”

The issue was compounded by the fact that the Virginia High School League (VHSL) postponed fall seasons and crammed all athletics into the second half of the school year. The six-week seasons left little time between sports for multi-sport athletes.

Below is a breakdown of students currently participating in spring athletics at LHS:

• 22 — Middle school track (boys and girls)

• 21 — Varsity track (boys and girls)

• 19 — Varsity boys soccer

• 17 — Varsity baseball

• 15 — Girls soccer

Page County High School has been able to field all varsity teams this spring, including girls tennis and junior varsity squads for baseball and softball. The Panthers are not fielding JV soccer teams.
