WOODSTOCK, July 10-14 — After winning the District 3 championship in late June, Luray Little League’s 50/70 all stars returned to Woodstock last week and finished up the summer one game shy of competing for a state title.
Luray went 3-2 overall in the Virginia 50/70 Championship held July 10-14 in Woodstock. The 10 teams in the state tournament field hailed from all across the commonwealth, including Richmond, Charlottesville, the Northern Neck and Northern Virginia.
Luray emerged from three days of Pool Play with a 2-1 record. They defeated Arlington National, 11-2, on Friday, July 10 and Central Accomack, 9-8, on Saturday, July 11. Their only loss in the opening rounds came to eventual state champion Richmond, 20-11, on Sunday, July 12.
Six teams advanced to the single-elimination rounds. Luray beat Cavalier Manor, 12-0, on Monday, July 13 to advance to the semifinals. The two undefeated teams — King George and Richmond — received byes in the first round of single-elimination. The two teams would eventually play in the state championship on Tuesday, July 14. King George defeated Luray in their final game on Monday afternoon, 3-0.
Richmond won the state championship and will advance to the Little League 50/70 Southeast Tournament scheduled for July 24-27 in Clarksville, Tenn. Over the course of five games, Richmond outscored its opponents 71-17. Luray scored 11 of those runs in one game — the most given up during the state tournament by the eventual champion.
The 50/70 tournament features a 50-foot pitching distance and 70-foot base paths. This format bridges the gap between traditional Little League (46/60) and full-sized baseball.
Three players from Luray helped Woodstock win its first ticket to the Southeast Tournament in 2025.
