Massanutton murder

Luray panoramic

May 2, 1889A difficulty occurred on the Massanutton Mountain at Spracker’s Spring, about 200 yards beyond the Page line last Monday, between two men, one named Kite and the other Higgs, both of Shenandoah, in which Kite was so badly wounded that he died Monday night.

Higgs, our informant states, knocked Kite down with a dogwood bullet, inflicting such injury as to cause his death as above stated.

Higgs was arrested on Tuesday morning, soon after Kite’s death, but the result of his examination we have not heard.

Higgs is a young man about 22 years old. Kite was a man of middle age, and both lived near New Market.
