BUCKINGHAM — Going into Tuesday night’s Region B quarterfinal, the Buckingham Knights were 19-0 and ranked No. 8 in Virginia’s 2A girls basketball, according to MaxPreps.com. However, they hadn’t really played anyone outside of the James River District…and they certainly hadn’t played the Panthers of Page County.

Behind 17 points and 12 rebounds from senior Caris Lucas, the seventh-seeded Panthers pulled off a big upset of No. 2 Buckingham and won last night’s Region B quarterfinal, 52-39.

Standout sophomore Adryn Martin added 13 points and 11 rebounds in the win, while senior Gracie Mason and junior Alexis Frymyer both scored eight points.

With the win, Page County (10-13) will now travel to third-seeded Clarke County (16-8) to take on the Eagles in one of two semifinals Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. Clarke reached the semifinal round after beating sixth-seeded Madison, 46-40, on Tuesday.

Page has gone 1-2 with the Eagles this season, all in the month of February. After a six-point loss on the road Feb. 3, the Panthers came back with a 12-point win at home four days later. Their final meeting came in the quarterfinal round of the Bull Run tournament last week, when the third-seeded Eagles beat the sixth-seeded Panthers by seven, 48-41.

Thursday’s other Region B semifinal matchup will see top-seeded Luray (23-2) host fifth-seeded Central of Woodstock (16-9). The Falcons reached the semifinal after defeating fourth-seeded Strasburg, 49-37, on Tuesday night, while Luray dominated eighth-seeded Stuarts Draft, 71-20.
