January 5, 1989 — A smoke detector saved the lives of a Newport family Thursday in an early morning blaze and a Luray family lost all of their belongings in a fire Thursday night. The Newport fire occurred at the Ricky Lucas residence on Va. 685.
According to Shenandoah Fire Department Captain Dave Huffman, the department received the call at 1:12 a.m. Firefighters from Shenandoah and Stanley responded to the alarms to find the two-story log dwelling fully involved. Huffman said that the Lucas family was in bed asleep on the second floor of the house when Mrs. Lucas heard the smoke detector go off in the laundry room area. No injuries were reported.
Five children, ranging in age from 5 months to 6 years escaped serious injury Thursday night when a fire gutted the Luray apartment. According to Dan Seal of the Luray Fire Department, 29 firefighters responded to a call they received at 7:42 p.m. at a two-unit apartment located on East Main Street. Seal said that when they arrived at the scene, the apartment located at 1250 E. Main was fully involved. The apartment was occupied by Linda Turner and Charles “Tony”Spain and five small children who were at home at the time of the blaze.
The apartment located at 1248 E. Main Street was occupied by Doris Presgraves, her daughter and her son-in- law, who were not home. The apartment suffered smoke and heat damage.
