School Board prepares to announce new head of the division by month’s end

LURAY, May 15 — During Thursday’s regular meeting of the Page County School Board, Chairman Megan Gordon read a prepared statement related to the search for a new superintendent for the local school division.

Gordon stated that members of the School Board met on Friday, May 2 to review applications received for the position being vacated June 30 by Dr. Antonia Fox. However, when the application deadline passed on April 30, only one application had been submitted.

“That application has been accepted [meeting all requirements]…according to State Code,” Gordon stated. “The School Board will meet in an undisclosed location in closed session to interview the applicant on Friday, May 16.”

With only one applicant, the School Board also decided to cancel the planned interview panels by staff and community members with the candidate(s) on Thursday, May 22.

“Both groups and other stakeholders will be able to meet the new superintendent at various meet and greet sessions planned in July,” Gordon stated on Thursday.

The school board chairman stated that the Board would “provide any updates necessary” after the interview session on Friday. At this time, no announcements have been made regarding the new superintendent. Gordon stated that the School Board had a “goal of naming a new superintendent by the end of May.

Dr. Fox issued a statement announcing her retirement at the end of the 2024-25 school year back in January. The outgoing superintendent of Page County Public Schools was first hired in May 2021 and has lead the local school system through the latter portion of the COVID pandemic and the division’s recovery, a trend of rising test scores and better performing schools, and a time of higher, more competitive compensation for teachers, faculty and staff.

“After 30 years in public education and after careful reflection and extended consideration, I am writing to share that I will retire at the end of the 2024-2025 school year. It has been an incredible honor and privilege to serve as the Superintendent of this wonderful school division,” Dr. Fox stated in the Jan. 24 letter.

When she was hired in May 2021, Dr. Fox replaced Dr. Wendy Gonzalez, who’s three-year contract expired on June 30, 2021. The previous January, Dr. Gonzalez had notified the school board that she would not be seeking renewal of that contract. Dr. Fox followed that trend and gave the school division ample time to find a replacement.

Dr. Fox signed a three-year contract on July 1, 2021 and then a one-year extension last summer. She came to Page County after serving as the assistant superintendent of Poquoson City Public Schools.

Her last day (under contract) is June 30. Her replacement officially begins July 1.

  1. I want to say this is a sad day for the quality of education in Page County–1 candidate.
This demonstrates a lot of different perspectives- but I must say it should be a reflection on the current leadership within the school board and system as a whole.
Past leadership (at least a decade) failed to groom quality educational leaders. Hiring practices has and is still a social expermient that has failed the citizens of this county.
Most leadership promotions these days is given to inexperienced and limited experience people. Tax payers pay attention to the dollars given to the school system with minminal positive returns to the local citizens and graduates.

  2. “Concerned Citizen” (But not concerned enough to use a real name). Maybe perverts and other certain kinds of people know better than to come here?
