SVEC donates $30,000 to area organizations

Five projects in Page receive $7K to support soup for seniors, new lighting at library, music instruments for students, and back-to-school bash

ROCKINGHAM, July 29 — Operation Round Up, SVEC’s charitable-giving program, added $30,000 to area organizations’ budgets this summer to assist with an array of initiatives, including food and hygiene purchases, lighting upgrades, holiday gift shopping and a back-to-school celebration.

Grants are awarded through a fund supported by co-op members who voluntarily round up their bills. SVEC also provides a corporate contribution. The next, and final, round of giving for 2026 will occur in November. Applications are available at svec.coop/ORU.

The July grant recipients are listed below:

Augusta County

• Magnolia Rose Cottage ($2,500): to purchase a whole home generator to ensure the human trafficking survivors it serves and its volunteers remain safe and secure in a power outage.

Highland County

• Highland Medical Center ($500): to purchase shelf-stable goods at its Sharing Shed for people who have food insecurity.

Page County

• Community Works 4Page ($1,000): to purchase fresh produce, ingredients and other supplies to prepare and deliver a variety of healthy soup meals to senior citizens in Page County.

• Page Library Association ($2,500): to replace all current fluorescent lighting in the library with more efficient LED lighting.

• People Inc. of Virginia ($920): to provide a back-to-school celebration for low-income children in Luray.

• Shenandoah Elementary School PTA ($1,500): to purchase musical instruments and instructional items for the music program.

• The Care Closet ($1,100): to help with essential support, including food, hygiene products, diapers, formula, clothing and emergency assistance to individuals facing financial hardship.

Rockingham County

• Massanutten Regional Library ($2,500): to help establish a Little Free Pantry in Harrisonburg to support people who have food insecurity and to provide a simple, dignified way for neighbors to help one another.

• Moving Mountains ($1,000): to aid the purchase of a motorized stair lift for a brain injury survivor residing in a multi-level home.

Shenandoah County:

• Shenandoah Alliance for Shelter ($2,500): to provide emergency utility and housing stability assistance to Shenandoah County households.

• Shenandoah Area Agency on Aging ($2,374): to provide emergency back-up power for three commercial freezers.

• Shenandoah Community Health Clinic ($2,500): to replace broken water heater and repair broken gutters.

• Shen-Paco Industries ($2,500): to help with essential transportation costs in serving about 80 adults with disabilities across Shenandoah and Page counties.

• Wild Child: Museum & Menagerie ($2,000): to replenish its scholarship fund, which provides opportunities for families representing low-income households, facing job loss, or that have a lack of social support.

Winchester/Frederick County

• Congregational Community Action Project ($2,500): to help clients through a crisis by paying utility bills or rent and keeping them housed.

• The Kare for Kids Foundation ($2,000): to purchase holiday gifts, helping families to provide a happy Christmas for their children.

Chartered in 1936, SVEC maintains more than 8,000 miles of electric lines and serves more than 103,000 meters in the counties of Augusta, Clarke, Frederick, Highland (all), Page (all), Rockingham, Shenandoah and Warren, and the city of Winchester (all).

SVEC was the first electric cooperative chartered in Virginia.
