Dear Editor,
I want to say thank you for all the support and outpouring of goodwill by those who contributed to my efforts to take supplies to the disaster victims from Hurricane Helena.
As it turns out, I wound up in Avery County, N.C. in the town of Spruce Pines. The Sheriff’s department in Washington County, where Damascus is located and a potential distribution center, told me they were overwhelmed with donations. So I traveled south to Avery County.
Spruce Pines was heavily impacted, especially along the river. The airport emergency operations supply distribution center and drop off point was grateful for all the items we delivered, but it was overwhelmed with used clothing and cloth material donations.
I located two churches who were willingly accept all clothing and associates donations — one was the headquarters of the United Methodist Church Disaster Relief team.
The current need is now for T-111, shingles, generators, extension cords, and other building materials as the inexpensive tarps on roofs are not going to survive the winter. Seniors are looking for propane heaters. It was 28 degrees the evening before my arrival, and getting colder.
There is so much to do. Sewage systems are compromised, water is still not functioning properly, electricity is limited in some areas, and the list goes on. I was overwhelmed by the care and generosity of the Page County citizens who provided material and donations.
Lastly, I would be remiss if I didn’t give a huge shout out to folks like Dolton Good and many others who are heavily involved in sending help south to our fellow Americans.
Respectively,
Michael Overfelt ~ Luray, Va.
