Shenandoah NP entrance

June 25, 1964 — Mayor and Mrs. Fred Walker and Mr. and Mrs. John Kane were put to flight Monday evening at the Pinnacles Picnic Grounds, in Shenandoah Notional Park, when a black bear showed up to participate in the picnic.

After retreating a safe distance Mayor Walker and friends regained their composure and after some reconnaissance returned to the scene armed with rocks. A few heaves at the bruin sent him on his way whereupon the party resumed their picnic dinner without further mishap.

According to park rangers, there is estimated 80 to 90 bear in the park area at this time, most of them in the central part.
