HARRISONBURG, June 3 — Luray High School’s Davey Johnson won a state title in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:28.68 at the VHSL Class 2 state track and field championship at James Madison University on June 2-3.
Johnson’s victory earlier this month represents the only state championship — team or individual — earned by a high school athlete in the county this year.
The LHS sophomore has worked hard to get to this point. Twelve months ago, Johnson posted a state runner-up finish in the 800 meter run as a freshman. In November, he started his sophomore year with a second-place finish at the state cross country meet, just under five seconds behind the state champion. Then in March, Johnson set a new school record in the 1000 meter run and took yet another “silver” at the state indoor track meet in Lynchburg. In the Region 2B meet held at East Rockingham High School on May 24, Johnson posted yet another second-place finish in the 800 meter run.
Now, the sophomore has finally attained his “gold medal” goal and brought a state championship home to Luray. The best part for Bulldog fans…he has two more years in the maroon and white.
