Basketball

March 4, 1965 — The Page County Panthers, one of the most formidable basketball teams ever assembled in the Shenandoah Valley area, defeated the Warren County Wildcats last Friday night at the Bridgewater College packed-jammed gymnasium, 49-35, to win the District 10 tourney title and earn the right to represent the Virginia Group II District 10 at the state regionals this week in Charlottesville.

The Panthers’ victory over Warren in the title game marked their ninth consecutive triumph.

When the game ended, excited Page County fans rushed onto the floor and lifted Panther Coach Carter Ellis on their shoulders.

Page County co-captains David Phillips and Ken Burner accepted the championship trophy for the Panthers.

  1. I remember those days if my mind is working correctly there was a Cubbage and a Hoke on those teams also, not long after that Page and TA were powerhouses with 2 of the best teams in the state but as fate would have it instead of TA and Page meeting in the tournament final as predicted both lost in semifinals and Luray, who upset page went on to win the state title for a couple years
