State Police Bomb Unit responds with Bomb Tech and explosives K-9

LUCAS HOLLOW, May 16 — A welfare check in Lucas Hollow on Saturday ended up with a Stanley man being arrested for having explosives devises.

Russell Timothy Ropka, 40, of Stanley, Va. Was taken in to custody without incident and charged with two counts of Va §18.2-85 – manufacture, transport, distribute, possess, or use of a fire bomb or explosive materials or devices, according to a report from the Page County Sheriff’sOffice.

Ropka was held at the Page County Jail without bond.

On Saturday, May 16, Page County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the 1400 block of Lucas Hollow Road in reference to a welfare check, according to the report. During the course of the welfare check/domestic disturbance investigation, it was learned that a male subject had allegedly been screeching wheels in front of the residence where the female subject of the welfare check was located.

The female alleged that two loud explosions were heard outside of the residence.

While checking the area, deputies encountered the alleged suspect’s vehicle, the sheriff’s report continues. Deputies lost sight of the vehicle initially, but then found the vehicle abandoned in the area shortly thereafter. Upon checking the vehicle, deputies observed what appeared to be an explosive device.

The area was secured and Virginia State Police Bomb Unit was requested by the sheriff’s office. They responded with Bomb Techs and an explosives K9. VSP Bomb Techs retrieved the suspected explosive device from the vehicle and secured it.

As a result of the investigation, Ropka was taken into custody.

In addition to the Virginia State Police, the Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Shenandoah Police Department, Page County Fire/EMS, Stanley Vol. Fire Department, and the Page County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office.
