Dear Editor:
Q: How do you attract lots of 8 year-olds (and younger) plus 80 year-olds (and older) and everyone in between to a Page County event?
A: First, build cardboard boats for the community, then hold a regatta.
Back in July and the beginning of August, Community Works 4Page (CWorks4Page) volunteered with the Stanley Police Department to prepare for PACA’s annual cardboard boat regatta scheduled for Saturday, August 15 at the Hawksbill Pool. How did they prepare? By building boats, of course.
Then, at the regatta, about 50 people of all ages and from all over Page showed up to cheer on the contestants, competing with over a half dozen boats, all captained by kids. PACA — the Page Alliance for Community Action — organizes this fun event each year; Stanley’s new Chief of Police, Rebecca Jenkins, acted as Master of Ceremonies; and the Sheriff’s Office, local fire and police departments, and CW4P were among the groups entering the competition.
Community Works 4Page continues to grow its volunteer base across Page County, now numbering more than 125 people who partner with local civic, church, and nonprofit organizations to strengthen our community and restore neighborliness, regardless of political differences.
Initiated by the Rural Urban Bridge Initiative and implemented by local democrats, Community Works 4Page volunteers span the political spectrum — including Republicans, Independents, and people disengaged from politics — tackling local concerns, and bringing people together.
Through CWorks4Page, volunteers serve the community together — from river clean-ups, to church drives, to public forums, to the ongoing Soup 4 Seniors program, participating in community events like the regatta, and more.
Upcoming volunteer opportunities and projects on the September CWorks4Page calendar include volunteering at the Sunflower Festival (over the weekend), the 5K race benefitting Arise of Page County on Sept. 19, and the annual visit of the RAM Clinic (Remote Area Medical) to Page County Sept. 25-27.
