Vehicle crashed through fence and hit tree, driver died at PMH

LURAY, Dec. 1 — Law enforcement officials are saying that a Luray man involved in a single-vehicle crash on Sunday may have died from a “medical emergency” before he ever crossed over West Main, crashed through a fence, and struck a tree near the Luray Singing Tower.

Ralph Edward Janes, 83, of Luray, crashed his 2007 Honda Odyssey at 12:05 p.m. just past the intersection of Leakesville Road and West Main Street. He was traveling north on Leakesville Road and never stopped once he reached the intersection.

Upon their arrival, several officers with the Luray Police Department attempted CPR, according to Chief C.S. “Bow” Cook. However, they were unable to revive Janes, and he was transported to Page Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

While Chief Cook noted that “the individual died on the scene” and “possibly before the intersection,” the state police report stated that “the driver of the Honda…suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to Page Memorial Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.” However, the state police report also indicates that “a medical emergency is considered a factor in the crash.”

Virginia State Police continues to investigate the single-vehicle fatality, but they did not indicate if Janes’ body would be sent to the state medical examiner’s office for an autopsy. Despite suffering life-threatening injuries in the crash, he was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident.

Janes was born on January 22, 1941, in West Virginia and was a son of the late Delbert W. Janes and Iona Myers Janes. He worked as an IT manager for Bell Atlantic, retiring with 31 years of service. On April 6, 1963, he married Linda Marie Smith Janes, who survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Kenneth Janes and wife Melissa of Ashland, and Ralph Edward “Eddie” Janes of Germany; a daughter, Debbie Cubbage and husband Terry of Stanley; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family has planned a private service.

Arrangements are being handled by The Bradley Funeral Home in Luray, Va.
