Austin leads Page in district loss at home

SHENANDOAH, Jan. 31 — The Page County High School girls basketball team struggled to keep pace with the Falcons of Central on Friday night, dropping the Bull Run District matchup 62-30. The Panthers hit only 23 percent of their shots from the floor and turned the ball over 15 times, while Central leaned on a game-high 24 points from sophomore Veronica Gordon.

After falling behind 9-2 in the opening four minutes following Gordon’s only three-pointer, Page went on a 7-4 run to close the first quarter. A traditional three-point play by junior Kahlei Shifflett and buckets by sophomore Adi Caton and junior Ali Purdham closed the deficit to 13-9.

The Panthers would only hit one bucket in each of the next two quarters, as the Falcons went on runs of 14-3 and 21-7 in the second and third quarters, respectively. Purdham scored all of Page’s points in the second frame, while senior Karleigh Austin scored five of the Panthers’ seven points in the third. Page trailed 27-12 at the half, and 48-19 heading into the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Lindsay Babb started off the final frame with back-to-back three-pointers in the first two minutes. Austin soon followed with another triple. Despite the positive burst, it was too little, too late, as the visitors outpaced Page 14-11 in the fourth and claimed a 62-30 Bull Run victory. The 28-point margin was much larger than Monday night’s meeting between the two teams, when Central won at home, 43-35.

Although Central only hit 38 percent of their own shots from the floor and committed seven turnovers during the game, nine of 10 Falcons put point on the board during the district road win. The Falcons went 12-of-20 from the line (60 percent). Gordon was the only Central player in double digits.

Austin lead the Panthers with 10 points, while Babb had six and Purdham added five. Page went 7-of-11 from the line (64 percent), while hitting only 23 percent from the floor.

Up next, Page County (5-13, 3-6) travels to Clarke County (13-4, 8-1) on Tuesday, Feb. 4 for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off. Central (10-7, 5-3) hosts Luray (7-9, 6-3) the same night.
