Stolen gloves give away thief

Luray-Main St old

May 19, 1892 — Several weeks ago Mr. Loewenstein’s store in this place was broken into and robbed of several pairs of shoes and gloves. At the time no clue could be secured to the burglars, and the matter was soon forgotten by all except Mr. L. and our ever watchful Chief of Police Perry.

A few days ago a colored boy, Henry Adkins, who heretofore has always borne a good reputation, attended worship at one of the colored churches on the hill, and in casting in his alms it was noticed that he wore a pair of fine kid gloves, which attracted the attention and suspicion of some who saw them.

Sergeant Perry was soon informed of the matter when a warrant was issued for Adkins’ arrest. His room was searched where several articles were found and identified as belonging to Mr. Loewenstein.

Henry attempted to explain by stating that the goods were given to him, but Justice Grayson took a graver view of the matter and committed him to jail for trial.
