A plant that could handle Luray’s ‘needs’ into the next century

Luray-Cave Hill

October 26, 1989 — Construction has begun on a sewage treatment plant that should fill Luray’s needs into the next century.

“This will double the town’s capacity for treatment, allowing growth in population to at least triple before any alterations need to be made to the plant, said Earl Sutherland, vice president of Gilbert W. Clifford and Associates, engineers for the project.

“The town is counting on the population doubling and industrial needs growing,” he said.

Luray received a $3.7 million loan from the Farmers Home Administration to build the plant. The loan will also pay for laying sewer lines in recently annexed areas on the east and south ends of town. To repay the loan, residents’ sewer rates are expected to rise from a $12.75 minimum to about $18 in July.
