Imogene Ruth Schlossin Burgen, 92, died on May 3, 2021, in Luray, Virginia.
She was born December 16, 1928, in Omaha, Nebraska. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Norman Burgen. She was also preceded in death by her parents, William A. A. Schlossin and Gladys Madeline Rider Schlossin Worsley and her sisters, Marcia Schlossin Baldwin and Audrey Schlossin Benz.
Imogene graduated from Chico State University in Chico, California with a degree in Elementary Education. She met Bill at a square dance while she was living and teaching school in Auburn, California. William and Imogene were married January 18, 1953 in Paradise, California.
When Bill joined the National Park Service in 1956, they embarked on the journey of a lifetime. Imogene loved living in national parks all over the United States and enjoyed being a mother, raising her children in historic and scenic places and being a park wife.
The couple returned to his hometown of Applegate, California after Bill’s retirement and built their retirement home themselves. They lived there 25 years until relocating to Luray, Virginia to continue their retirement.
Bill and Imogene loved to travel and camp, visiting friends in national parks and crossing America on two lane backroads. She delighted in seeing how people lived and worked in small towns across the country. They also loved to cruise and visited exotic places around the globe.
Imogene was an accomplished quilter. She loved to sew and piece quilt tops just so she could sit and hand quilt in the evening. Her favorite quilts were pieced traditional patterns and scrappy. She also enjoyed knitting, embroidery, cross stitching and reading.
Survivors are her daughters Signe Ruth Burgen Vaughan of Luray, Virginia and Maren Holt Burgen Lombardi (Eric) of Fernley, Nevada, grandchildren, Alexandra Madeline Lombardi of Fallon, Nevada and Patrick Vincent Lombardi (Brooke Lynn) and great grandchildren, Delanie Maren Lombardi and Ashtyn May Lombardi of Loomis, California.
Imogene’s ashes will be buried later beside her beloved husband in the Old Auburn Cemetery, Auburn, California. She asked that some of her ashes be sprinkled across the country on her final trip west.
Arrangements are being handled by the Bradley Funeral Home in Luray, Va.
