STANLEY, April 13 — Volunteer firefighters in Stanley logged a busy day on Monday, with four separate calls, including three fires.
A structure fire on Aylor Grubbs Avenue started the day at about 4:57 a.m. The Stanley Volunteer Fire Department responded to a structure fire involving a detached garage, according to a report by the department. Captain Huffman arrived on scene at 5:01 a.m. and found a detached garage heavily involved with fire, threatening two nearby residences and several outbuildings.

Volunteer firefighters, along with a Stanley Volunteer Rescue Squad member, assisted an elderly couple with evacuating their residence. Engine 24, the first-arriving engine, deployed a deck gun to knock down the main body of fire.
The fire was brought under control after about one hour of operations, according to the department’s report. The fire resulted in the loss of a 2013 Dodge Caravan, a 2012 Ford Taurus, a push mower, a riding mower, and other contents inside the garage. The nearby residence sustained heat damage and warped siding; however, the homeowners were able to safely reoccupy their home after fire operations. The garage and home are insured.

Wind conditions and a heavy fire load were contributing factors in the incident. A total of 15 firefighters responded, operating with four pieces of apparatus. Page County Fire & EMS and the Page County Sheriff’s Office assisted on scene.
A few hours after leaving that scene, a fire was reported on River Road. At 2:32 p.m., the department responded to reports of an outside fire. While units were en route, dispatch advised it was a large controlled burn that required extinguishment. Firefighters remained on scene for approximately two hours extinguishing the fire.

Lieutenant Zachary Croft was in command of the incident. Virginia Department of Forestry assisted.

Units quickly extinguished the fires. Two of the vehicles sustained extensive fire damage. Crews completed overhaul and returned to service. The vehicles on the property were insured.
