LURAY — It’s an event that keeps getting bigger and bigger each year, and drawing more and more folks from surrounding counties… and this Independence Day may set records with the 250th anniversary celebration sweeping the nation this weekend. The annual “Downtown Get Down” serves as a great time to showcase the Town of Luray and the Page Valley.

Another installment of Luray’s “Downtown Get Down” is set for this Saturday, July 4, from 5 to 9 p.m. along the serene Hawksbill Creek and the scenic Luray Greenway. The annual event that has drawn thousands to Downtown Luray in recent years is the result of a partnership between Luray’s Parks and Recreation Department, the Luray Downtown Initiative, the Page Alliance for Community Action, and the Page Valley Arts Council.

Live music will kick off at 6 p.m. on two stages, with Raised on Analog at Ruffner Plaza (below the West Main Street bridge), and Everyday People at the Mechanic Street bridge (where the ducks gather).

Kid’s activities will include multiple games, two bouncy houses (inflatables), and face painting, while the Page Valley Arts Council will provide crafts, carnival games and Charleen Johnston on stilts along the greenway.

There will be food vendors offering everything from tacos and ice cream, to crab cakes and BBQ…and everything in between.

PACA will be conducting two Duck Races to raise funds for the non-profit organization, which supports programs encouraging healthy lifestyles for Page Valley families and educating children about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. The races will be conducted in the Hawksbill Creek adjacent to Ruffner Plaza at 5:50 and 8 p.m.

Fireworks will be launched at the fairgrounds starting at about 9:25 p.m. Visibility should be good in most parts of Town, especially on the east side, where the fairgrounds are located (off Collins Avenue). For those along the greenway, the fireworks will appear over the horizon to the east. For those who wish to head over to the fairgrounds, gates will open at 7 p.m. (use Gate 1 at the DMV to enter at 15 Fairlane Drive, Luray).

Prior to the “Get Down” — the 4th of July Children’s Parade will be held at Inn Lawn Park at 10 a.m., hosted by the Shenandoah River Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Children are encouraged to dress in their most patriotic attire and decorate their favorite mode of transportation — a bicycle, tricycle, wagon or scooter (nothing motorized) — in their best red, white and blue and bring it to Inn Lawn Park (adjacent to the Page Public Library) for a patriotic July 4th display and march around the scenic park. Parents may walk the parade as well.

The parade will be led by a police cruiser and a fire truck, accompanied by Mayor Stephanie Lillard. Miniature flags will be distributed to carry in the parade, which will follow a short circular route through the blocked-off streets surrounding the Park, from Jamison Avenue to Amiss Avenue to Cave Street and back to Inn Lawn.

Luray’s VA250 Dedication will take place at 4 p.m. at the North Loop of the Luray-Hawksbill Greenway. Following the dedication of plaques in Shenandoah to reflect on religious freedom in colonial times, and in Stanley to honor our agricultural heritage, Saturday’s marker in Luray will honor our industrial past near the Redwell-Isabella Furnace Historic District. The Luray Greenway Foundation is raising funds to extend the northern end of the greenway to that site.
