Congressman Cline to speak at local Lincoln Day dinner, but will he admit to ‘Big Lie’ he supported?

Letter

To the Editor:

Isn’t it great that one of the keynote speakers at the upcoming Lincoln Dinner in Stanley on April 22, an annual Republican event, will be our own Congressman, Rep. Ben Cline? You know, the Ben Cline who supported Trump’s “Big Lie” that the 2020 Presidential Election was stolen by the Democrats, despite being beaten decisively in Virginia by 54 percent of the voters.

I’m relieved that Joe Biden was supported nationally and in Virginia by 74 electoral college tallies and over 7 million votes. But as a Virginian, I’m still embarrassed to be represented in Congress by a representative with questionable integrity who violated his oath of office and still believes in Trump’s lies. I am troubled to have many Republican friends and neighbors (75 percent of the voters in Page County) who supported a liar, swindler, misogynist, and grifter who actively tried to overthrow the U.S. Government, ignoring the Constitution and the democracy our ancestors so courageously sought to support and defend. How do you even intelligently discuss this with your friends when not a single shred of evidence, conspiracy, or lawsuit nationally has ever emerged that proved the election was a lie. Sorry, pillow man.

I expect Ben Cline hopes that his constituents in Page County and his congressional district have short memories on his pathetic record of misrepresenting us. It’s bad enough that even before the 2020 election votes were counted, Cline joined other politicians and wrote to then-Attorney General William Barr citing unfounded “widespread reports of irregularities, particularly in the vote counting process.” This from a lawyer who lied in his oath to support the U.S. Constitution three times — once upon getting his law degree from the University of Richmond, and the other two times when he got to be elected/reelected as a U.S. congressman.

Cline took his sad, yet treasonous, activities even further when he joined 126 other Republican members of Congress in supporting Texas v. Pennsylvania, a lawsuit filed at the U.S. Supreme Court contesting the results of the 2020 presidential election.

Even Trump’s loaded Supreme Court declined to hear the case on the basis that Texas lacked standing under the Constitution to challenge the results of an election held by another state. But Cline — a lawyer —supported the unlawful suit but has yet to apologize for his embarrassing lack of leadership.

I guess Cline will think lying to his constituents for supporting the former President’s treasonous actions is patriotic.
