Dr. Huber promoted after one year as Assistant Superintendent of Instruction

LURAY, May 28 — On Wednesday evening, the Page County School Board unanimously appointed Dr. Bryan Huber as the next superintendent of Page County Public Schools.

“I’m truly honored and incredibly excited to begin this journey together as the new Superintendent of Page County Public Schools. It’s a privilege to serve a community that cares so deeply about its students, schools, and their future,” Dr. Huber stated in a press release issued May 28 by PCPS. “I am enthusiastic and optimistic about what we can accomplish together.”

Dr. Huber gets the promotion from within the division after serving one year as Assistant Superintendent of Instruction, Accountability and Innovation. A June 17, 2024, letter from PCPS superintendent, Dr. Antonia Fox, announced his hiring in Page County, after serving seven years as the Assistant Superintendent of schools in Greene County.

In January, Dr. Fox announced that she would be leaving the division’s top post after four years.

“After 30 years in public education and after careful reflection and extended consideration, I am writing to share that I will retire at the end of the 2024-2025 school year. It has been an incredible honor and privilege to serve as the Superintendent of this wonderful school division,” Dr. Fox stated in the Jan. 24 letter.

When she was hired in May 2021, Dr. Fox replaced Dr. Wendy Gonzalez, who’s three-year contract expired on June 30, 2021. Dr. Fox came to Page County after serving as the assistant superintendent of Poquoson City Public Schools and signed a three-year contract. A one-year extension runs through June 30. The current superintendent will retire at the end of the month with a base salary of $151,000.

Dr. Huber’s new contract with PCPS is also for a three-year period as superintendent, with an annual base salary $170,000 — making him the highest paid public official in Page County. The contract extends through June 30, 2028.

“We are excited to announce the appointment of Dr. Huber as the next Superintendent of Page County Public Schools. He brings the vision, leadership, and experience needed to continue to guide our division forward,” said school board chair Megan Gordon. “Dr. Huber has a deep commitment to student success, a strong track record of collaborative leadership, and a passion for success that aligns with our division’s goals. We look forward to working together to continue building a bright future for all students, staff, and families in Page County.”

Dr. Huber has been a Virginia educator for the past 18 years, previously serving as a mathematics teacher and assistant principal with Augusta County Schools, and the Director of Transportation and Principal with Rockingham County Schools. The new PCPS superintendent holds a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Virginia Tech, a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Liberty University. In 2020, Dr Huber was recognized by the Virginia Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (VASCD) as an Impact Award Winner.

When he came to Page County last summer, Dr. Huber replaced Gabby Ryman, who served as Assistant Superintendent of Instruction for two years and then accepted a position with Prince William County Public Schools. The school division has offered no timeline for filling the current assistant superintendent vacancy.

PCPS only received one application for the superintendent vacancy — even after extending the deadline. The School Board decided to cancel the planned interview panels by staff and community members with the candidate on May 22.

Dr. Huber begins his role as PCPS superintendent on July 1.

“As I transition into this role, my focus will be on student-centered decision making, empowering our amazing teachers and leaders, and building strong partnerships with families,” he stated in the press release. “I believe that when we come together with shared purpose and passion, there is no limit to what we can achieve for our children and community. ”
