Brenda Frazier Haggett

  • Age: 64
  • Education: Graduated High School in 1977, took accounting classes at Blue Ridge Community College.
  • Work: Co-Owner of Boxcar Deli & Subs and Four Seasons Gifts in Shenandoah; owner of several businesses in Harrisonburg; worked in Accounts Payable, Payroll and Accounts Receivable for two local businesses; prior to that, I worked in Finance for approximately 10 years.
  • Community involvement: I volunteer with the Shenandoah Memorial Festival each year and manage the Shenandoah Beautification Committee, which decorates areas of Shenandoah seasonally. Both of these areas I am wanting to expand.
  • Family:  Married; three children and 10 grandchildren.

Why are you running for public office?

I feel it’s time for different ideas and ways to find solutions to issues. I want to see Shenandoah grow again with new business and events. I want to listen to our citizens about what needs to be added or improved to make it better for our citizens and to bring more tourism to the area.

What makes you the best candidate?

Being self employed for all these years, I have had to make difficult decisions regarding budgeting, expanding, marketing, hiring and more. Every decision pertaining to running a business was made. My background in finance may help with budget shortfalls. My ideas on changes are “outside the box”, but will help improve Shenandoah as a whole.

What is the most pressing issue facing the Town of Shenandoah?

The current infrastructure is in need of a major overhaul. The current council has been working on repairing and replacing water line breaks where needed, but this is an ongoing issue and needs to continually be adjusted. Getting this done is a priority.

What is one thing that you would like to change or improve?

I would like to find a way to get the funds needed to construct a road into the Big Gem property so we can do expansion such as an amphitheater, more parks and walkways, basketball courts and other areas for the children. Until the road is constructed, none of these can be accomplished.

• Briefly describe a decision you have made in a leadership role and tell why you made that decision.

We recently made the decision to retire and sell our business property. We made this decision for several reasons, but one for me was so that I could devote more time to my family and more time to volunteer with the Memorial Day Festival and the Beautification Committee in Shenandoah.

Early voting started Sept. 22
